Job candidates can be biased about themselves, or just flat-out stretching the truth. To get a better perspective, employers should be serious about reference checking, writes Dr. Cynthia Hedricks, SkillSurvey’s Chief Analytics Officer in this article in Fast Company. There are three ways employers can make the most of their reference checks:

  1. Consider the reference checking process a “test” for the job candidate. For example, will they follow-through, properly notify their references
  2. Ask references for both the good — and for critical feedback especially how a candidate could improve
  3. Seek your own reference feedback in addition to any reference feedback that may be available on social media
